History of the Universiade

The history of student sports dates back to 1905 when American students decided to arrange sports competitions between young, talented athletes.

14 years later, the Confederation of Students was created, and within another year it was transformed in the International Confederation of Students, under the aegis of which team games were held until 1958. Their participants were mostly European countries.

After the right to hold student games switched to FISU in 1959, sport competitions have been regularly held under the title of Universiade, an amalgamation of words Olympics and University.
Since 1959, young students and graduates from different countries of the world at the age of 17 to 25 demonstrate their sports talents and skills popularising an active lifestyle.

For the first time, the Russian Universiade was held in Moscow in 1973. The summer sports competitions were held in Kazan in 2013 and the winter sports competitions were successfully held in Krasnoyarsk in 2019.

Ekaterinburg pretends to the right to hold Universiade 2023 where the best of the best will compete for the first places in 18 different sports.

The Heritage of Universiade

The Universiade is a powerful catalyst for the development of the city, region and country.
The events at the World Universiade level give a powerful impetus to the development of the host cities. While something is created within 15–20 years in ordinary life, it is embodied in 3–4 years during the preparation for such an international event.

After the Summer and Winter Universiade in 2013 and in 2019, a powerful sports center for training world-class athletes remained in Kazan and Krasnoyarsk. At the Universiade venues, international sports events have already been held and will be held in the future.
In addition to the infrastructure that is being created for the Universiade, for example, roads, hospitals, sports complexes, the creation of an intangible heritage is very important.

The Universiade 2013 in Kazan gave Russia an invaluable experience in holding major public events, which was later used in the organisation of the Sochi Olympics in 2014.

The Universiade opens a new tourist destination for the guests, so excursion destinations have expanded in Krasnoyarsk and the tourist destinations, that have already been used, are refined.

The Universiade gives an impetus to the development of the cultural projects, rise to new events, that will be held afterwards, for further promotion of the city and the region.

Catering concept for the 2023 FISU World University Games is being developed
On March 15 governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev held a meeting with the heads of the Executive Directorate, government officials, and industry representatives. The main topic of the discussion was the catering concept for the participants and guests of the 2023 FISU World University Games.

- This is one of the main tasks in preparation for the World University Games. The quality of catering and how well it is organized will affect not only the general impression of the Universiade and our hospitality but may also impact the results that athletes can achieve. It goes without saying that we must do our best job organizing it. The catering concept should be designed with all client groups in mind, - said the governor.

Catering must answer to every requirement put forward by the FISU, which means safety and quality control are assured at every step. The supply of food must remain uninterrupted so that athletes and other participants can keep up with their regimen. Furthermore, certain special food needs must be accounted for, since people of many cultures and religions will be visiting Sverdlovsk Region during the games.

Notably, Ekaterinburg and Sverdlovsk Region have acquired experience in this field as they have already hosted several international events, such as matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

According to the general director of the Executive Directorate Alexander Chernov, the catering concept will account not just for the athletes and their attendants, but also for everyone involved with the games: from the press to the technical staff.

Countdown to the 2023 FISU World University Games begins in Ekaterinburg
On October 11th, 2020 the countdown clock to the opening of the World University Games in Ekaterinburg has begun its metaphorical ticking. The installation was unveiled precisely 1000 days before the event, on the Historic Square, at the very heart of the city.

General Director of the Executive Directorate Alexander Chernov said: "These thousand days are very symbolic. It is an opportunity to tell one another that we will not waste a single second".

Right until the presentation the clock's design has remained hidden by an art installation that was crafted by young Ural artists. On the day before the event, the First National channel has introduced the mascots of the university games to the nation. Deer Yaggi, malachite Hitty, and sable Kedry were present at the countdown ceremony. They were talking to and taking photos with the guests and residents of Ekaterinburg that have gathered for the ceremony.

"A legacy is being created for the townspeople and residents of the Sverdlovsk region. Its purpose is to boost the growth of education, physical culture, and sport", - said in his speech mayor of Ekaterinburg Alexander Vysokinsky.

The clock counting down to the opening of XXXII FISU World University Games is made in a style reminiscent of constructivism. It is shaped like the letter "U", an iconic part of the World University Games symbology. Furthermore, the clock consists of two screens that broadcast not only the countdown itself but also recent news pertaining to the preparations for the Games.

The mascots of the Ekaterinburg 2023 FISU World University Games are showed at "Evening Urgant" and a "Countdown Clock" was launched in Ekaterinburg
1000 days before the start of the Ekaterinburg 2023 FISU World University Games, the entire country saw the long-awaited mascots on the air of the "Evening Urgant". Deer Yaggy, malachite Heaty and sable Cedry came to the show as full participants.

The debut in the country's most fashionable TV show is no coincidence. The mascots of the University Games are modern and fun city dwellers.

For example, Cedry is a guitarist and music fan, who can be considered as a reference to the Sverdlovsk rock club. While visiting Urgant, sable even performed a joint track with the music band «Fruits». His yellow shirt with green accents is a reference to the emblem of Ekaterinburg.

Heaty is a blogger, on the show she had a live stream on Instagram. Her green suit symbolizes the patterns of malachite.

Yaggy is a basketball player, on the air of the «Channel One» he scored a three-pointer. His look is inspired by the «Silver Hoof». Therefore, one of the deer's boots is painted in unusual silver colour, and he has gems on his panama.

«Ekaterinburg is truly a sports city. It is the birthplace of outstanding athletes who have won the most prestigious awards for their country and hometown. Such achievements are impossible without a modern sports infrastructure, without the best coaches, without the support of the stands. I am confident that preparing for the University Games will unite us, give us a new goal and motivation to learn about sports, watch sports, play sports and get better! » - Oleg Matytsin, Minister of Sports of Russia and FISU President, commented on the presentation of the mascots of the University Games.

The mascots already have names. Heaty is an abbreviation for "malachite". Yaggy is embedded by the name of the reindeer lichen, which reindeer eats. Sable usually feasts on pine nuts, that is why he got the name Cedry.

The mascots have their own Instagram account, where they will communicate with fans and provide the latest news on preparations for the Games. Masks with images of Yaggy, Heaty and Cedry will also appear on Instagram.

«Ekaterinburg is inextricably linked with sports. Two years ago, we hosted the FIFA World Cup. From today, the countdown of 1000 days to the FISU World University Games will begin. In 2023, we will welcome thousands of young athletes and guests from all over the world. We have everything to make this holiday unforgettable. Our task is to be as open as possible, to draw as many people, ideas, projects, businesses as possible into the orbit of the University Games. The Games are, first of all, new opportunities and points of growth», - said the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev in a conversation with the organizing committee of the Games.

Besides the presentation of the mascots 1000 days before the start of the Games, the «Countdown Clock» was launched in the Historical Square of Ekaterinburg. The watch is made in the spirit of constructivism and is equipped with two screens. The screens show the time remaining before the start of the competitions and information about the preparation for the Games.

«1000 days is a milestone in the preparation for the Games. It was for this date that we presented the mascots. Now Heaty, Yaggy and Cedry will accompany us until the closing ceremony of the Games. They will meet the athletes in the athletes' village. They will cheer up the audience in the stands. They will tell the guests about the major events around the University Games. This is an important symbol of the Games, I sincerely believe that the characters turned out to be kind and lively, and will be well received in society. », - said during the ceremony Alexander Chernov, the head of the organizing committee of the University Games, during the ceremony.

Ekaterinburg 2023 FISU World University Games logo will be presented today
The logo will be shown at the Ural Music Night festival in six different versions.

Ekaterinburg 2023 got not just a static emblem, but a live image that is being changed depending on the context. For example, the spectators of the Ural Music Night festival will see the logo in the style of pop music, indie rock, rap and other musical styles. The logo will be adapted to the genre of the performer who appears on the stage at the time of the presentation. The image can be changed by colour and set of elements.

The place and time were not chosen by chance: The Ural Music Night, like the University Games, is an event that brings together a wide variety of people, mainly youth and students.

A live broadcast is organized in «Vkontakte» social network.

The «Lorien» agency from Kazan, which won the competition ahead of 23 competitors, developed the unique logo. The designers were faced with the task of creating an emblem that will be in demand in three years - at the time of the Games, when digital technologies will surely go ahead.

As a result – the logo that combines simple geometric shapes, minimalism, constructivism and modern animation. The basis of the logo is the Latin letter «U», which unites all the emblems of the University Games. It is stylishly intertwining and complementing by elements that reflect the values of the competition and the energy of the participants.

The special design was made possible by a computer script for Adobe Illustrator – a code that randomly generates the colour and shape of the image.

«Recently I have presented an updated style of the competition: instead of the Universiade, the University Games appeared. And now the logo of the Games in Ekaterinburg is ready. Technology is developing rapidly, and this logo is a tribute to the spirit of the times. A special reason to be proud that Russian designers developed such a bold digital logo» says the president of FISU and Minister of sports of the Russian Federation, Oleg Matytsin.

The sports pictograms have been changed along with the logo. The familiar silhouette of a person has been replaced by details of various sports. For example, the image of the shuttlecock symbolizes badminton, the rings on the background of the platform – artistic gymnastics, and the curves of the run tracks with a fragment of the green field – athletics. Moreover, each new pictogram comprises of the elements of the main emblem of the tournament – simple geometric shapes.

The logo will be supplemented with its own corporate identity by the end of this year

In the first week of September, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) organized and held the introduction seminar on the most important issues in the preparation and organization of the FISU World University Games. The training event, traditionally held in preparation for the future editions of the Games, was held online for the first time, due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

About 70 participants from FISU and the Executive Directorate «Universiade-2023» took part in the seminar. The goal of the organizers was to present the future hosts of the event with a global picture of the FISU World University Games. Presentations from the FISU headquarters in Lausanne contained both general information about university sports, FISU and the history of the FISU World University Games, as well as topics on specific activities.

«The value of this seminar can't be overestimated», notes Alexander Chernov, the General Director of the Executive Directorate. «These are the basic knowledge needed, the important details and the solutions to potential problems».

The seminar gave an opportunity to acquainting the staff of the Directorate with various events and programs that take place in parallel with the main complex of events under the auspices of FISU. Operational details were also discussed such as the life cycle of the Directorate, major services for various client groups and cross-functional collaboration.

«FISU has a long history of cooperation with the Russian Student Sport Union and the organizers of the FISU World University Games in Russia», said FISU Secretary General Eric Sayntrond in his opening speech. «We started with the Games in Moscow (1973), continued our cooperation in Kazan in 2013, and then together we held Krasnoyarsk 2019 FISU World University Games». «Now we are preparing to go to Ekaterinburg in 2023. Each time the strong point of the Organizing committees was that we dealt with the same team from the very beginning of the bidding campaign to the end of the Games» he added. «Many of these people are still involved in the organizing of sports events in these cities. It is important to start with a strong team and keep it».

The introduction seminar is one of the main elements of the FISU Knowledge Transfer programme led by its Education and Development Department. Typically, several functional sessions are held later and an observer program is organized. The observer program for organizers from Ekaterinburg will take place during Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games.

The logo and the mascots
of the Summer World University Games
in Ekaterinburg 2023 have been determined
The logo will change colour and shape depending on the type of the carrier. Three works won the mascot competition at once.

Three years before the opening ceremony of the University Games, FISU got its own brand – a logo and mascots. They will be presented a little bit later, but it is already known that both symbols of the competition are unique.

Eight Russian design agencies participated in the competition for the development of the Games logo, which sent a total of 24 works.

For the first time in the history of major tournaments, the logo will come to life and change depending on the context. This is due to the fact that it is generated by a computer script from a set of elements while retaining the link to the Latin U – the traditional detail that unites all the logos of the University Games. The colour of each element will depend on the situation in which it is applied: green, with a reference to malachite and Ekaterinburg, it can turn white-blue-red, taking on the colours of the Russian tricolour.

«Of course, I was hoping for a special logo for our tournament, but I did not expect it to be so modern. It seemed to be ahead of the time and came from the future. I think that with such a symbol the University Games 2023 confidently claim the title of the most advanced ones in the history of the Games» said Alexnder Chernov, the General Director of the ANO «Executive Direction «Universiade-2023».

The boldness and innovation of the logo were also noted by other members of the jury which, in addition Alexander Chernov, included a filmmaker and a producer Fedor Bondarchuk, the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev, the director of the Department of Physical Education and Mass Sports of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation Maxim Urazov, the general producer of «Channel One» television channel Alexander Fayfman, an actress Victoria Tolstoganova, a photographer Fedor Telkov, the head of the strategic projects of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts Alisa Prudnikova, an academician of the Russian Academy of graphic design Igor Gurovich.

The logo will be presented officially after its approval at the meeting of the FISU presidium in the second half of August.

In addition to the logo, the University Games have found their own mascots. The jury chose its top-3 out of nearly 200 works sent from all over Russia. After the short list was determined, a popular vote was planned to select the first winner. But the finalists mascots turned out to be so bright and modern that it was decided to keep all three. Their authors are young design students: Taisiya Gubina from St. Petersburg, Vlada Soboleva from Ufa and Valentina Tishchenko from St. Petersburg.

«Our teacher Irina Petrovna Kuznetsova always says that going to the University, listening to theory and doing homework is good, but working on order is much better. When there are certain requirements and you have to complete the work, focusing on them every minute, then progress and improvement are faster. The skill is being developed, and you become more highly employable» says Taisiya Gubina. She sent two versions of the mascot to the competition, and the one that took the first place, the designer thought about for several weeks, but depicted at the last moment.

Vlada Soboleva is a record holder, she sent six works. «I created each one from scratch, thought over the elements, the character of the hero for a long time, added clothes to make it more realistic, played with colours. By the way, in the end it was not the brightest, but very youthful hero who won» explains Vlada.

Valentina Tishchenko created her mascot, drawing by hand. «It is more convenient for me, for some reason I do not really like the tablet» the student admits. «Then you can modify it on a computer. But at first, I just develop a movement pattern: I depict a spot and arrows and strokes come from it to understand how the character will move, what size it will be».

The winners will receive prizes from the organizers of the Games, including invitations to the opening ceremony.

The presentation of the mascots is planned at the forum «Russia-Country of Sports» in Ekaterinburg in the fall of 2020.

The first year on the way to the Games-2023: a view of FISU
One year ago, the FISU Executive Committee entrusted the right to host the XXXII World Summer University Games 2023 to Ekaterinburg. All 23 members of the Executive Committee supported the application of Ekaterinburg.

Today FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond commented on this event for Ekat2023.com:

-Exactly one year ago, on the 2nd of July, FISU approved the candidacy of Ekaterinburg as the capital of the Summer World University Games in 2023. We had no doubt in making this decision. Russia is known as an excellent organizer of major sport events. Universiades in Kazan and Krasnoyarsk are good examples. I am sure the preparation and organization of the Games in Ekaterinburg will be at the highest level.

Over the past year, the Director of the FISU World Summer Games Department, Marc Vandeplas, has been to Russia several times and knows firsthand the progress of preparations for the main sporting event of 2023:

- I have witnessed with my own eyes the practical progress of the preparations for the Games. Several times I visited Ekaterinburg on inspection visits. The tasks for the organizers are not easy, given the tight deadlines for large-scale preparation. In addition, we are well aware of the approach of Russian partners who always want to be on top. The situation, of course, is complicated today by the coronavirus pandemic. But even in this not easy situation, we managed to find a solution: we are constantly and efficiently working with our colleagues from the OC online. We did not slow down the process for a minute. My experience in organizing the World University Games allows me to be sure that everything is going according to plan.

Russian creative agencies submitted to the competition 24 variants of the logo of the Summer World University Games Ekaterinburg 2023
Eight Russian creative agencies submitted 24 works to the logo competition of the Summer World University Games Ekaterinburg 2023.

The composition of the competition committee, which will choose the best graphic symbol of the upcoming sports tournament, includes the head of strategic projects of the Pushkin state museum of fine arts Alisa Prudnikova, the general producer of «Channel one» television channel Alexander Fayfman, an actress Victoria Tolstoganova, a filmmaker Fedor Bondarchuk, an academician of the Russian Academy of graphic design Igor Gurovich, a photographer and researcher of the Urals Fedor Telkov, the director of the department of physical education and mass sports of the Ministry of sports of the Russian Federation Maxim Urazov and the General Director of the Executive Direction of the Games Alexander Chernov. The Jury is headed by the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev.

Creative agencies from Ekaterinburg, Moscow and Kazan presented their logo designs.

The logo of a sport tournament is the most important symbol of any competition, which is remembered for a long time. The best examples are remembered by the audience even after decades. A striking example is the logo of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow: the Spasskaya Tower of the Kremlin, composed of curved lines of sports tracks with a star at the top.

The logos of the University Games are always based on the Latin letter U and are complemented by elements that reflect the character and identity of the region. So, in most of the options developed for Ekaterinburg, the theme of gems and malachite, which became a real Ural brand, can be traced.

«The logo is the symbol by which many will get acquainted with the Sverdlovsk region and Ekaterinburg, where the Summer World University Games will be held in 2023. We have to choose from the works submitted to the competition that which has incorporated the most striking Ural images and meanings. The logo should reflect the features of the place where we live, the energy of the Urals and our love of sports» - said the chairman of the jury, the Governor Evgeny Kuyvashev.

The jury included people whose daily work is related to creativity and visualization of images. A designer Igor Gurovich promises that he will react to the selection of the winner with all responsibility.

«A logo is not a picture for the sake of a picture. This is a symbol in which its authors must put several levels of meanings and accurately formulated interpretations of these meanings. I am very interested to see how it will be possible to combine the images of the Urals, sports and energy of Ekaterinburg. The logo does not have to be liked by everyone. It should become a tool with which the city can tell about itself. I would like the logo to be remembered and to remain an important cultural myth of the place after years» - says Igor Gurovich.

«I am grateful to everyone who agreed to take part in the work of jury. The composition is a sight for sore eyes! I have no doubt that such a «dream team» will cope with the task and will make a choice that we all will be proud of» - said the General Director of the Executive Direction Alexander Chernov.

The decision of the competition committee will be announced before the end of July.

The admission of works for the mascot competition for the World Summer University Games Ekaterinburg 2023 has been completed
Almost 200 works from more than a hundred students of 40 art universities of Russia entered the mascot competition for the World Summer University Games 2023. Students drew all 12 (twelve) characters, which at the first stage had been selected by the participants of the All-Russian vote.

The fox became the most popular hero – the competition participants had sent 36 different options of this character. The top 3 also included 25 sables and 20 lizards.

« I thank all the participants of the competition for their activity. It is gratifying that not only young creative guys from the Sverdlovsk region and Ekaterinburg sent their works. Students from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Korolev, Vladimir, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk and a dozen other cities of Russia prepared their options of the mascot. This suggests that interest in the sporting mega-event, which will be held in the Urals, is already huge. I am convinced that everyone will follow it! », - said the Governor of the Sverdlovsk region Evgeny Kuyvashev.

The organizers of the competition indicate a new trend – a lot of female characters: a fox, a she-wolf, a she-bear. Note that in previous years only two Winter Universiades had female mascots – the University Games in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 1985 and in Innsbruck (Austria) in 2005.

Another distinguishing feature of the most of the works is a thorough and unconventional approach to the character's image. At the first stage, the residents of Russia determined that the mascot should be provided with certain attributes: it should wear a start number on its chest, be wearing glasses or a cap. Students made their characters even brighter: for example, one was dressed in fashionable sneakers, the other stands out not only for clothes, but also for jewelry. Members of the jury note the high level of the works and thoughtfulness of the characters.

«It turned out fresh and creative. The works exceed our expectations. It was a great idea to let students express themselves. I hope that for someone this competition will become an additional motivation for studying, and for someone it will be the first step towards professional creativity», said the head of the Executive Direction «Universiade-2023» Alexander Chernov.

Now the floor is for the jury. Its composition is already known. The chairman of the jury is the Governor of the Sverdlovsk region Evgeny Kuyvashev. The jury also included the Olympic champion in synchronized swimming, Anzhelika Timanina, the actress Ksenia Korneva, the actor and TV presenter Sergey Svetlakov, the winner of the Dakar rally Sergey Katjakin, the general director of the technopark «Universitetsky» Marat Nuriev and the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts Sergey Aynutdinov.

In the near future, the experts will study in details all the works and select three characters-finalists. After that, every resident of Russia will be able to vote for his front-runner. The winner and therefore the future mascot of the World Summer University Games Ekaterinburg 2023 will be the hero which will gain most of the votes.

The Jury of the World Summer University Games Ekaterinburg 2023 mascots competition was announced
It consists of seven people: the athletes, a politician and the stars of show business.

The competition will last until May 18. To participate in the competition, you must be a student of an art university or college and register on the website talisman.ekat2023.com.

The mission of the competition is to create an image of the mascot that corresponds to one of 12 characters (among them – an elk, a fox, a brown bear and a sable). More than 100 participants of the creativity competition are registered for now.

The task of the jury is to make a short list of the best works. Three mascots with the highest rate according to the jury voting results will get to the final.

The Governor of the Sverdlovsk region Evgeny Kuyvashev (chairman of the jury), the Olympic champion in synchronized swimming Anzhelika Timanina, the actress Ksenia Korneva, the actor and TV presenter Sergey Svetlakov, the winner of the Dakar rally Sergey Karjakin, the general director of the technopark «Universitetsky» Marat Nuriev and the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts Sergey Ainutdinov will act as independent experts.

The choice of such a jury is not accidental. All of its representatives were either born in Ekaterinburg and in the Sverdlovsk region or are currently working in the region.

«We know a lot of mascots that were used only at the time of the events. But even «the Olympic Bears» sometimes happen. I would like our soul to fly into the image invented by the guys. » - said a native of Ekaterinburg Sergey Svetlakov.

The jury will start voting immediately after the end of works acceptance. To ensure that all the participants are on an equal footing, the Games Organizing Committee developed video tutorial from which everyone can learn the history of sports mascots, evaluate their significance and even learn how to create a mascot from scratch.

One of the most important lessons is that the mascot must have a completely unique image.

« I would advise you to divide the work on such a project into several stages. First of all, you have to dive into the topic: to study the mascots of the previous tournaments, championships, Olympic Games, Universiades. From dozens of characters select those that you especially liked. You need to look at their construction: how the eyes and the nose are placed, how big the head is in relation to the body, are there any glasses, hat and other accessories. Further, on the basis of these data you can build your hero. Of course, there is a risk of plagiarism, but don't stop at one option, change the elements, think about the feature that your mascot will have. It can be exactly the feature that can be remembered stronger than the rest and hook the jury. » - The artist Sergey Ainutdinov explains the technology for working on a mascot.

The mascot is one of the main symbols of the competition which often becomes its living embodiment. This happened, for example, with the mascot of the Dakar rally-raid, with Bedouin, which is now known to the whole world.

«I will remind the story of the appearance of this rally. It all started with the fact that the French motorcycle racer Thierry Sabin got lost in the sands of the Libyan desert. Three days later, the Tuareg tribe rescued him. The silhouette of Tuareg (a Bedouin, a nomad) as a saviour in the desert became of mascot of the future races. For me, the prize with the silhouette of Tuareg is of tremendous importance: this reward is not only for patience, fortitude and victory, but also for the desire to move on. I am sure that the mascot of the University Games 2023 will be an equally important incentive to move forward. » - says the racer Sergey Karjakin.

The jury voting results will be announced in June; then the images of the three mascots-finalists will be finalized by the animators. The winner will be selected by all-Russian voting. .

The second stage of the mascot development of the World Summer University Games 2023 in Ekaterinburg has started.
The second stage of the mascot development of the World Summer University Games 2023 in Ekaterinburg has started. Acceptance of works will last three weeks, after which the jury will choose the three best options.

The first step in choosing the mascot was a large-scale vote of Russians for the most attractive characters. According to voting results, 12 of the most popular characters were named. Now, each of them will have to get a visual embodiment with the help of young artists.

The conditions for participation in the competition are simple: you must be an active student of any art university of the Russian Federation and, as of April 27 this year, register on the website talisman.ekat2023.com.

Three participants whose works will come through to the final will receive two invitations to the Opening ceremony of the Games.

Creating the mascot is a unique opportunity for young designers to make themselves known. The World Games mascot is one of the most frequently used and recognizable elements of the Games. It is a symbol of a historical sporting event, whose image will be distributed around the world as millions of TV pictures, photos in social networks and various souvenirs. The mascot will be recognized across the globe long before the Games start.

"We all look forward to creating the mascot for the upcoming World Games," says Evgeny Kuyvashev, Governor of the Sverdlovsk region. - Probably, from the outside it looks like a family preparation for the appearance of a long-awaited child. We will have to choose a suitable name for the new hero and help him find a happy fate."

The result of online voting at the first stage was a short list of the following characters: brown bear, sable, reindeer, wolf, raccoon dog, elk, lizard, black stork, wild boar, fox, Silver hoof, malachite. It is now up to art students to portray them. The character should not remain faceless;

it should be given attributes and personality traits from the list, which was also defined by the interviewed Russians. Attributes include, for example, a starting number on the back or chest, stylish glasses, and a cap. The personality traits that were most often mentioned in the survey are friendliness, curiosity, wisdom.

"The World University Games are an unforgettable event that brings together thousands of students and fans from different countries. One of the brightest memories that guests will take with them is the artistic image of the Games symbol.

In my opinion, the mascot should be modern in appearance and perky in nature. At the same time, it is intended to inspire a sense of pride for the host country and embody the friendliness and hospitality of the hosts," said Alexander Chernov, Head of the Executive Direction of the Games 2023.

Students can work on the image of the mascot not only on their own, but also in groups. The application deadline is three weeks starting from April 27. On May 18, acceptance of the works will be completed.

Then a competent jury will determine three finalists for whom animators will develop three-dimensional models, come up with names and personal stories.

Images of three talismans-finalists will be brought out for final choice on national voting. Every resident of Russia will be able to vote for his favorite.

Summer World University Games 2023 brand design contest announced
ANO "Executive Direction "Universiade 2023" announces a contest for the Look of the XXXII Summer World University Games 2023 in Ekaterinburg.
The list of works executed within the competition includes the development of the official logo of the World University Games and their corporate identity.
The visual look of the Games is created for effective communication with the target audience: participating athletes, spectators both in the stands and on TV, Russian and foreign media, representatives of civil and business circles – in a word, with all sports fans.
The contractor's task is to create an easily recognizable, vivid and memorable brand that will form a positive attitude to the Games, look beneficial in the "interiors" of a sports competition (venues, broadcasts, souvenir design), evoke festive emotions and associations with student sports and the host city of the Games.
Due to the current situation - the coronavirus epidemic, the Executive Direction of the Games 2023 offers an unconventional approach to the implementation of this task and launches a search for a contractor for Games' logo design services in "remote" mode.
The proposed application format will allow agencies, whose employees are currently working outside of design agencies and studios, to remotely connect to the implementation of an absorbing task and to try their hand at a major international project. The winner of the competition will be determined by an authoritative jury. The panel of judges will be announced in the near future.
The Executive Direction of the Games 2023 invites candidates whose qualifications and experience meet the requirements of the application to participate in the announced competition.
Detailed information about the terms of the competition is available on the link

FISU Executive Committee: focus on preparations for the upcoming Games
Activities related to the regular FISU Executive Committee were completed in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Preparations for the upcoming summer and winter Games in the coming years were in the focus of attention.

Interim reports on the results of the work of the organizing committees were presented by the delegations of Lucerne, Chengdu, Lake Placid and Ekaterinburg.

General Director of the Executive Directorate ANO "Universiade 2023" Alexander Chernov reported to the members of the FISU Executive Committee on the current state of affairs in various areas including the masterplan, budgetary planning, and workforce planning. The head of the Russian delegation announced the successful completion of the first stage of the ongoing mascot selection campaign of the World Summer University Games in Ekaterinburg: more than 68 thousand people took part in the vote. Currently, the next stage has begun, during which students of art universities create images for twelve characters - leaders of the public vote. Following the results of this stage, the professional jury will select three characters. The final stage of the competition will again be a public vote determining the character to be called the Mascot of the Games 2023.

To date, three inspection visits by FISU representatives to Ekaterinburg have already taken place.

- We have revised and adjusted some of our plans accordingly and have already submitted the first draft of the masterplan at the end of 2019, - said Alexander Chernov.

In the publication on the official FISU website it is stated that "Ekaterinburg 2023 impresses with progress report".

- We are very happy with the collaboration with the Organising Committee of Ekaterinburg, - said Summer World University Games Director Marc Vandenplas. - Interaction in all functional areas is carried out professionally and efficiently. We have some challenges, such as the village being a really large project. However, the concept of the village is really very good because many sports will take place right at the periphery. That is indeed a very strong point.

Another strong point was the cultural concept presented that will be an integral part of the World University Games, which was revealed in the report of the Russian delegation. For the first time, the expanded cultural program will become a direct component of the World student games and the participants will also take part in the delegations' parade along with the athletes.

In addition, we organized for the guests a working day in Moscow, where useful talks with representatives of the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation and President of the Russian Student Sport Union were held.
The most important point of such visits, of course, is the direct contact with the organizers at the venue of the future Games".

Team Draw confirms University World Cup – Football group
Play
JINJIANG, CHINA – The draw for the Kelme 2019 FISU University World Cup – Football took
place under the studio lights of the Jinjiang TV Station here in China. Portuguese football
legend Luis Figo starred in a glittering ceremony ahead of the event's inaugural edition, with
the 12-day tournament getting under way on 21 November.

Sixteen men's and eight women's teams will play 68 matches from 21 November – 1
December. The university teams, representing 15 countries earned their places in the field
through continental qualifying tournaments. Paulista University from Brazil made it into both,
the men's and women's competitions – the only university to do so.

The event will begin with group play in a round-robin format, with the top two teams from each
group advancing on to the knockout stages. The winners of the semifinals will then play for
the title of 'University World Cup Champion', with the women's winner crowned on 30
November and the men's finals taking place on 1 December.

Between the two draws, Figo gave the packed television studio audience, primarily comprised
of students, some words of advice: "Passion is the most important thing when you decide to do something. Dedicate yourselves to your profession and follow your dreams."

He also spoke highly of the city of Jinjiang, known as the South Gate of China and the starting
point to the Maritime Silk Road. He said that Jinjiang is all set to begin living up to its new title
as the 'home of university football'.

FISU Director General Paulo Ferreira remarked that it was Jinjiang's passion for sports,
particularly football, that led to it winning hosting rights for the first four editions of this biennial
tournament.

The University World Cup is an exciting new format in the sport, as it brings together the best
university football squads from around the world, rather than national teams. It is an evolution
of FISU's highly successful World University League that was staged for four consecutive
years exclusively in 3x3 basketball. This initiative has now been expanded to men's and
women's football too, and both events are known as the University World Cups from this year
onwards.

President of the Russian Student Sports Union noted the progress in the development of student sports
President of the Russian Student Sports Union Sergei Seyranov noted the progress in the development of student sports in the country over the past few years, as well as the expansion of the calendar of competitions.

Russia hosted summer Universiade in Kazan in 2013 and in 2019 winter Universiade was held in Krasnoyarsk. Also, Russia received the right to host the summer Universiade-2023 in Ekaterinburg.

"We have come a long way since the Universiade in Kazan. The Russian Student Union listed 47 events for 37 sports in the unified calendar plan of the Ministry of Sports. This is not counting 27 events in 21 sports that are planned by the Russian Student Union itself. The calendar is huge", - Seyranov said by telephone to RIA Novosti.

"This year we performed well both in Krasnoyarsk and in Napoli (at the Summer Universiade). At the same time, we competed in Napoli without our track athletes. And as experience shows, participation in the Universiades adds confidence. Ekaterina Selezneva, for example, after the Universiade won the gold of the world championship in rhythmic gymnastics," said Seyranov.

20 of September is the Day of International Student Sports. Seyranov said that a series of events was timed to coincide with the holiday, the largest of which will be the opening of the XXXII Moscow Student Sports Games.

"This is the most massive competition for us. Of course, it's worth noting separately that we managed to get the right to host the Universiade in Ekaterinburg, a student city. So we can talk about progress in the development of student sports in Russia over the past few years," - he added.

However, the main attention of FISU representatives was paid to the organization of the Athletes' Village. The organizers of the Universiade in Ekaterinburg are changing the concept of the games. The idea was presented in Turin
At the Summer Universiade 2023 in Ekaterinburg, a cultural block will be introduced for the first time in the history of the games. The Head of the Executive Directorate of the Universiade, Alexander Chernov, told that three more categories of competitions in stage movements and dances, music and vocals, as well as street art will be added to 18 traditional sports.

"When we talk about the Universiade, we talk about students. An integral part of student life is culture, which is why the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuyvashev proposed the development of such a program. This has never been done in history, including in China or the USA, "Chernov told.

Participants in cultural competitions will not be limited in the style of performing their programs and works, and the created art objects will also become the legacy of the Universiade for Ekaterinburg. It is possible that among the competing there will be already well-known musicians, dancers and artists. However, the last word on the composition of teams for the participating countries.

"The program was developed and presented at the Organizing Committee of the General Assembly of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Representatives from 140 participating countries listened with interest to the proposal. Now they will select artists and painters who will come to us, "said Chernov.

Earlier, URA.RU reported that the FISU General Assembly was held in Turin, and the head of Ekaterinburg, Alexander Vysokinsky, participated in it.

On the decision of the WADA Executive Committee
At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), held in Lausanne on December 9, 2019, it was decided to suspend Russia from holding and participating in international competitions, including the Olympic Games and World Championships.
The Executive Direction of the Summer Universiade 2023 has noted the decision.
It should be noted that the preparation and holding of the World Student Games require the implementation of certain legal procedures for the fulfillment of contractual obligations and the adoption of appropriate organizational decisions.
To date, the Sverdlovsk region, the city of Ekaterinburg have already made significant financial investments to implement the bidding campaign for the right to host the event, attract human resources and commence capital construction works for the Universiade-2023.
Taking into account the scope of tasks and timing of such a large-scale complex event as the Summer Universiade, it is necessary to continue daily work without losing a time.

The stylish new logo – the Dynamic U – continues to play on the 'U' of university sport but also incorporates the dynamism of sport as well as the colours of inclusivity.

We want to build a vibrant global community of university sports, where one and all are welcome."

FISU's goal is to bring increasingly more students into the university sports fold, to foster healthy lifestyles and better mental and physical health for all. Therefore, the new logo emphasises inclusion as university sport is not classist or elitist but is the very definition of inclusivity.

Of course, we understand how challenging the task is: after all, it usually takes 6 years to prepare the Games, but in this case we have exactly half of the time. But we have two successful Universiades in Russia, we are familiar with the workability and professional skills of our Russian colleagues, therefore we believe in the success of the Summer World University Games in Ekaterinburg in 2023.
